About
In the 2024 challenge, SUBMERGED, students will explore the mysteries of the ocean, gaining insight into one of Earth's most complex ecosystems. Young engineers, ages 9 to 14, will work together to design and program small-scale autonomous LEGO robots. These robots will complete missions that simulate underwater exploration, allowing teams to score points based on their creativity and technical skills. Each team will compete in three 2.5-minute rounds to achieve their highest game score. In addition to the robot game, teams will present their robot design, core values, and a research project focused on innovative solutions to real-world oceanic challenges. Judges and referees will include volunteers, scientists, and engineers from NAVWAR and NIWC Pacific.
The event will feature demonstrations of robots from the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST LEGO League, alongside a NAVWAR technology display. Special guests, including dignitaries from NAVWAR, NIWC Pacific, the Eastlake Educational Foundation, and Sweetwater Union High School District, will be in attendance. The opening ceremonies will include performances by a Sweetwater District string quartet and NIWC Pacific's color guard.
